About Us

The mission of the Language Centre is to respond to changing educational and commercial environments and to enhance the University’s reputation as the major provider of high quality education and training in the country.

The objectives of the Language Centre are to:

  • become a Model Centre of Excellence for language teaching and services;
  • provide internationally recognized Intensive English, Arabic and Malay programmes for the international market;
  • strengthen its role in the teaching and research of Borneo languages;
  • provide premium language-related services in terms of translation, editorial work, and specialized language training.

Established in 2001, the UBD Language Centre moved into its current premises on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the UBD|IBM building at the university in June 2011.

The Language Centre coordinates and teaches language and communication courses within the university and within the wider community. In addition to Local, European and Asian languages, the Centre teaches a compulsory breadth unit in Academic Writing and Presentation skills to ensure that all students have skills in comprehending tasks, in researching and in academic writing and referencing. Centre staff are also involved in community work and are consulted as examiners and advisors, in both government agencies and schools.

Speak. Grow. By participating actively in cultural and language opportunities, students will enhance their understanding of their own culture and their place in the world. This will help to equip them with the 21st century skills they need to grow and prosper as individuals and as community members.
