New Language Modules in LC

Dr Tran during Vietnamese Language Class

July 26, 2022

The Language Centre UBD (LC) has added two new languages: Belait and Vietnamese. The Belait language is one of Brunei’s minority ethnic languages from the Belait district but is now considered an endangered language with only a few hundred (or fewer) speakers left. This language will be taught by new academic staff member Puan Noor Alifah Abdullah, who is an experienced teacher and a native Belait speaker.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese language has been offered in LC since last semester (S2 2021/2022), and LC has added Vietnamese level II this semester as a continuation for those who had taken Vietnamese I. It is led by an expert in Vietnamese language, Dr Tran Trong Nghia.

This can be regarded as a significant milestone at LC in its effort to diversify and enhance Borneo and ASEAN languages. Both of these languages may be taken by students in UBD as their breadth modules. Below are details for each module:

Belait Language:

Lecturer: Puan Noor Alifah Abdullah (alifah.abdullah@ubd.edu.bn)

LY-1423: Belait I (Coming soon)
